Meet Gene Burns!
While many in the public eye work hard to avoid labels such as "unpredictable" and "iconoclast", KGO’s Gene Burns embraces them gleefully. Each weeknight Burns holds forth celebrating the richness of the English language, challenging cherished opinions and enthusiastically tilting at windmills. His bosses grumble that both his words and telephone calls are too long! His detractors label him too opinionated. While listening respectfully, the successful broadcasting veteran begs to differ. "Free speech is an American parlor sport and intellectually based verbal combat is the essence of its exercise," he says, adding, "Citizen activism is at the very heart of democracy."

Port Highlights
Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy is a heady blend of artistic and architectural masterpieces, classical ruins and extravagant baroque churches and piazzas. The city's 2,700-year history is on display wherever you look; the ancient rubs shoulders with the medieval, the modern runs into the Renaissance and the result is a bustling open-air museum. Julius Caesar and Nero, the Vandals and the Popes, Raphael and Caravaggio, Napoléon and Mussolini are among the countless luminaries who have left a mark on the city. Modern Rome has one foot in the past, one in the present—a fascinating stance that allows you to tip back an espresso in a square designed by Bernini, then hop on the metro to your next attraction.
Sorrento, Italy  As you journey down the fabled Amalfi Coast, the route takes you past rocky cliffs plunging into the sea and small boats lying in sandy coves like brightly colored fish. Erosion has contorted the rocks into shapes resembling figures from mythology and hollowed out fairy grottoes where the air is turquoise and the water an icy blue. White villages dripping with flowers nestle in coves or climb like vines up the steep, terraced hills.
Taormina, Italy  Strategically poised between Europe and Africa, this mystical volcanic land has been a melting pot of every great civilization on the Mediterranean. Today, Sicily fuses the remains of sackings past: graceful Byzantine mosaics rubbing elbows with Greek temples, Roman amphitheaters, Romanesque cathedrals and baroque flights of fancy. Messina's ancient history lists a series of disasters, but the city nevertheless managed to develop a fine university and a thriving cultural environment.
Dubrovnik, Croatia  Commanding a splendid coastal location, Dubrovnik is one of the world's most beautiful fortified cities. Its massive stone ramparts and splendid fortress towers curve around a tiny harbor, enclosing graduated ridges of sun-bleached orange-tiled roofs, copper domes and elegant bell towers. Today Dubrovnik is known for being a fashionable, high-class destination.
Hvar, Croatia  The island of Hvar bills itself as the "sunniest island in the Adriatic." Not only does it have the figures to back up this claim—an annual average of 2,724 hours of sunshine with a maximum of two foggy days a year—but it also makes visitors a sporting proposition, offering them a money-back guarantee if there is ever a foggy day. While fog has been known to happen, hotels don't ordinarily have to give much of their income back. All this sun is good for the island's fields of lavender, rosemary, and grapes. Hvar is also probably Croatia's hippest island, attracting celebrities, would-be artists and politicians.
Venice, Italy It's called La Serenissima, "the most serene," a reference to the majesty, wisdom and monstrous power of this city that was for centuries the unrivaled mistress of trade between Europe and the Orient and the bulwark of Christendom against the tides of Ottoman expansion. Built entirely on water by men who defied the sea, Venice is unlike any other town. No matter how many times you've seen it in movies or on television, the real thing is more dreamlike than you could ever imagine. Its landmarks, the Basilica di San Marco and the Palazzo Ducale, are exotic mixes of Byzantine, Gothic, and Renaissance styles. Shimmering sunlight and silvery mist soften every perspective here, and you understand how the city became renowned in the Renaissance for its artists' rendering of color. It's full of secrets, inexpressibly romantic and at times given over entirely to pleasure.
